International Profit Associates Campaign for Tuskegee Airman to Receive Eagle Scout Rank
San Diego, CA; Buffalo Grove, IL July 1, 2004 -- International Profit Associates ( IPA ) senior executives petitioned and organized for retired Tuskegee Air Squadron veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Cheatham, Jr., to be awarded his Boy Scout of America Eagle Scout Rank, 75 years after it was earned.
IPA senior executives, Robert O'Keefe, John Murnane, Al Bachman and Rich Lubicz petitioned three months to the Boy Scouts of America, President George H. Bush, and former President Gerald R. Ford for approval to award Cheatham with his Eagle Scout Rank.
Bachman, Star Rank and IPA Consulting Service Director along with Murnane, Eagle Rank and Director of the International Tax Advisors, served in the Boy Scouts of America review board for Cheatham. O'Keefe, Eagle Rank, coordinated the review board members and meetings. Each review board member concluded that Cheatham had earned the appropriate merit badges to qualify for his Eagle Scout Rank.
Cheatham, member of the Tuskegee Air Squadron, is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. During his 35 years in the Air Force, he earned his bachelors degree from Bethany College in Lindberg, Kansas and raised a family with his wife, Sylvia, in Japan and the United States. Cheatham's scouting career began in 1927 when he joined the Washington D.C. Boy Scouts and continued service in Harlem, New York. He rose through the ranks of scouting by earning 22 merit badges and performing community service. In 1930, Cheatham's attempt of attendance at the Eagle Scout board of review was unsuccessful due to a storm and damaged uniform on his extended walk to the review board.
"Most review boards can only hope a scout will turn out to be a good citizen, but in the case of Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Cheatham, Jr., we know. He can speak about how he lived his life and it is a living testimony to the Scouting organization," said Murnane.
"Being awarded my Eagle means a great deal to me. I have received many awards both in the military and civilian arenas; however, there has always been a sad spot in my heart for never receiving my Eagle badge. This was my first major personal accomplishment and it taught me that hard work and education can prevail. The Boy Scouts of America gave me the opportunity to achieve my goals," said Cheatham.
On September 18, 2004, Cheatham will be awarded his Eagle Scout Rank during a special presentation at the San Diego Air and Space Museum.
