Aiming for Biggest "Big Girl" Troop:
Girl Scouts-Totem Council seeks to establish largest alumni Girl Scout troop in US
SEATTLE, WA August 13, 2004 -- Girl Scouts-Totem Council aims to be the first local council to establish an official Girl Scout alumni troop, and set a record in the process. The help of all former Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts is needed to make this dream a reality.
"This record will help empower current girl scouts by showing them the size and scope of their local network and provide a network for former Girl Scouts to reconnect with each other," states Girl Scouts-Totem Council CEO Grace Chien. "We're challenging other Girl Scout councils across the country to try to break our record."
Totem Council estimates approximately 484,000 women living within northwest Washington are former Girl Scouts.
All women who participated in Girl Scouts – for any amount of time – are eligible for the alumni troop. They must be a current residents of the counties that Totem Council encompasses in northwest Washington: Clallam, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, north Mason, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom.
"We're asking all women to help us set this record," says Chien. "Please take five minutes to register and then pass the challenge to your friends, co-workers and neighbors."
Telling scary stories under the covers by the light of a flashlight, the pride felt wearing that Brownie uniform to school on meeting day or jumping into the frigid lake to pass the swimming test – all memories of a lifetime for many women who were former Girl Scouts. The registration Web site asks women to share their favorite memories of their Girl Scout experiences. Alumni will also be able to vote on a name for their new troop.
To register or learn more about the record attempt, visit www.girlscoutstotem.org. The registration deadline is September 30, 2004.
